Somniloquy A Kinetic Journey Through Sleep Talk
Context
Somniloquy is a motion design exploration that brings the quirky world of sleep talking to life through fast-paced kinetic typography animation. This project blends visual experimentation with narrative curiosity, inviting the viewer into the unpredictable rhythm of subconscious speech.
The core challenge was translating an abstract, internal human behaviour, sleep talking, into a compelling visual experience without relying on characters, dialogue, or literal imagery. I wanted the viewer to feel the strange, humorous, and disjointed nature of sleep talk, not just see it.
Challenge
To achieve this, I took a design-first approach that focused on:
Typography as Performance
I treated text itself as the main character. Type became dynamic and expressive, shifting in speed, scale, and motion to mimic the cadence of sleep speech.Visual Metaphor & Rhythm
I used bold contrasts, blur and static effects to mimic dreamlike transitions and the disorientation of partial awareness as someone moves between wakefulness and sleep.Experimentation with Timing
The animation pacing was key, by varying tempo, layering overlapping text, and introducing sudden stops and starts, the animation resembles the unpredictable flow of subconscious thought.
